Consistent with National Statistics (UNHS 2009/10), there was very high enrollment in all the schools that were visited. The report showed that, gross enrolment in rural areas was 122% compared to 111% in urban areas. However, the challenge come in at the point where there are fewer teachers and classroom blocks as compared to the number of pupils in the schools as such there are problems such as high teacher student ratio, poor reading culture, no furniture in classrooms and ultimately very high dropout and low retention rates.

The schools profiling exercise took place in March 2011.led by the self Help Foundation team. Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis was done for the six schools with key recommendations immerging from the teachers as well as students that we spoke to. The schools that were profiled include:

  1. Ngai Senior Secondary School

  2. Acaba Secondary School

  3. Adili Primary School

  4. Ogwet Primary School

  5. Awio Primary school

  6. Ngai Primary School
